Print and the Internet - Best Friends Forever

When I first started SS (Select-Start) I wrote a story about a possible death of magazines due to the Internet. I believed at the time that maybe magazines would become less popular due to the accessibility and cost-free perk of Internet sites. And then something happened.

As I looked on my kitchen table for Monday's mail I saw it, my very first subscription copy of Electronic Gaming Monthly and for the first time in a long time I felt euphoria. And that feeling reassured me that magazines were here to stay. And I'll explain.

I have bought many magazine before, but this was my first subscription and I had been waiting weeks to see if I would actually receive it. And once I saw that new, shiny mag on the table I couldn't think of anything else but flipping through it. I realized right then that there was no better feeling then just thumbing through pages of a magazine and being able to take in all the design that not many websites can provide.

I read lots of my daily news online, but not many of the sites have the design aspect that pulls me in like magazines do and that just reinforced my dream to aim to have a career in both a publication print and online aspects. Hopefully.

I think people will still want to have that ownership feeling of a magazine or newspaper and I think that that feeling will make sure that print publication stays around. Print publication don't have to end, but instead just get with the times.

Adding online content isn't about giving up to the times, but instead just rolling with the punches and adapting to the world. Think about it, Darwin would be proud.

Accents are funny, [insert laugh here]

I spend lots of time looking at game reviews for the sake of making a purchase. I usually head to my five main sites and in reading/watching each game review, I make the decision if the game is worth a buy.

Then there's the Escapist's Zero Punctuation game reviews.

Created by an Australian fellow named "Yahtzee" and filled with his satirical humor and obscene/innocent stick figure designs, he reviews each game and blatantly depicts his opinion.

Now let me say upfront that don't purchase anything solely going by his reviews, but I can say that sometimes his reviews ares spot on.

Anyways, enough of piling the sweets on Mr. Yahtzee. If you want to see for yourself, play the attached video for his review for Halo 3.

Smash Bros. Brawl looking so much better!

So after looking at some upcoming game videos, I saw a great movie trailer for Smash Bros. Brawl and it made my excitement for the game shoot through the roof.

For example this video is about Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong chasing a group of Koopa's and Goomba's (Honestly, how do we say these names seriously?) whom have stolen the Kongs' banana stash.

There is also another video that has Diddy Kong being saved from a Rayquaza, a pokemon, by the space ace Fox McCloud. My favorite? Seeing Diddy Kong shoot those bullets with his coconut guns was just the icing on the cake.

Long story short, the game looks fun and the trailers look to be a good added feature. Can't wait to see it in action and can't wait to use Sonic in is super chaos emerald mode.

Back and full of steam

I've been gone. Apologies for everything. Starting anew and life goes on.

So while watching an episode of Friends (the one with the leather pants) on my 360, I noticed the Gamefly envelope sitting on my speaker and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption just waiting to return to it's owner. And let me say that although the game is pretty good, it just wasn't what I was looking forward to in a Wii hit.

My two cents? Sure! Let's see how do I say this sensibly ... WHERE THE HELL ARE THE GOOD GAMES!

Why have I not had a great game yet on this console. Sure I have played some good ones like Legend of Zelda, but I haven't been able to really give up the 360 experience for the Wii. There are like a million available games for the Wii, but forgive me if Dewey's Adventure and the upcoming three installments of Petz doesn't tickle my fancy.

And that makes Richie sad. I bought the console for the pleasure of being two-thirds of the way to owning all the consoles and for the innovative game play, of course. I know that this season brings a golden child, Super Mario Galaxy, but damn it until then give me something to hold me over until Galaxy, Brawl and whatever else worth it comes out next year. I don't have a lot of money, Nintendo, make my investment worth it!

Wii helping to promote good health.

Yes, I know I have been M.I.A. for a long time, but I'm back. No excuses, lets just report something interesting and keep it short.

According to an article at www.time.com, since the release of the Nintendo Wii people have been saying how they use the gaming system as a workout tool, but no one has seen much proof. Until now:

Active video games like the Wii can fight child obesity, according to a report published by the Mayo Clinic in the January issue of Pediatrics. In that study, researchers found that children burned three times as many calories playing "active" video games versus playing traditional hand-held video games.

We've heard of the several injuries that have followed "Wii-fans" such as blisters, cuts, bruises, even cases of broken fingers due to players swinging the remote and either losing balance and colliding with something or sending their remote through television sets.

The article even mentions a gamer who played approximately 30 minutes a day and was able to lose nine pounds in six weeks.

So I found a new hobby for my Wii. I think I still got some of that Christmas turkey that needs to be worked off and now that summer vacation is coming, I might need to double-time it.
